Southwest Community Health Center is a nonprofit, federally qualified health center (FQHC) providing comprehensive health care to uninsured and underinsured people in the greater Santa Rosa area regardless of their ability to pay. SCHC services include primary care, family planning, obstetrics, mental health, adult day services, specialty care, integrative medicine, outreach, health education, prevention, wellness, and advocacy. About the position:
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Medical Officer is responsible for managing and mentoring the physician leaders at the different health center sites, ensuring the delivery of high quality care, leading physician recruitment/retention efforts and partnering with the Santa Rosa Family Medicine residency program through UCSF. The successful candidate will be a visionary with excellent follow through and will play an integral role in enhancing SCHC’s quality initiatives, engaging the physicians in that process, and in designing the organization’s new facility, which is planned as a green model for a state of the art primary care health center. Strong leadership skills, the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative and diverse culture, and a passion for improving the quality of care for the underserved are critical. Community health and EMR experience and bilingual English/Spanish fluency would each be a strong plus.
Responsibilities:
- With Leadership Team, establishes vision, goals, and priorities for the Health Center.
- Supervises, supports, and mentors physician leadership to achieve agreed local and organizational goals.
- Fosters commitment and teamwork among providers and clinical leaders.
- Participates in community-wide initiatives to improve access to high quality health care for the uninsured and underinsured.
- Participates in Provider meetings, QA meetings, Leadership Team meetings and other professional activities as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
- Supervises, supports, and evaluates site Medical Directors through goal setting, coaching, and mentoring.
- Provides for the diagnosis and treatment of health center patients within the scope of his/her license to practice medicine on an as needed basis (patient care expected to be 8-12 hours per week with no on call responsibility).
- Provides follow-up on patients seen including chart notations, lab review, and referrals to specialists.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Active California medical license, preferably in Family Practice, OB experience helpful and in good standing with the Medical Quality Control Board of the State of California.
- Ability to maintain hospital privileges at Sutter Medical Center and Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
- Minimum three years experience in a leadership position

Function: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer for Southwest Community Health Center is a key member of the executive team whose primary role is to inspire and lead the clinical staff for the our growing Health Center. The goal of the CMO is to ensure timely access to high quality medical care for SCHC patients through clinical systems improvements, recruitment and retention of providers, supervision of site Associate Medical Directors, and oversight of the quality improvement initiatives. In addition, the Chief Medical Officer provides clinical expertise and leadership in the design and implementation of new projects and innovations at the Health Center.
Specific Tasks/Duties:
Clinical Duties (approximately 12 – 16 hours a week)
- Provides for the diagnosis and treatment of health center patients within the scope of his/her license to practice medicine.
- Provides follow-up on patients seen including chart notations, lab review, and referrals to specialists.
- Provides back-up for mid-level providers on site, or by phone during the day or after hours.
Management Responsibilities (approximately 20-24 hours a week)
- With executive team, establishes vision, goals, and priorities for the Health Center
- Supervises, supports, and mentors physician leadership to achieve agreed local and organizational goals.
- Fosters commitment and teamwork among providers and clinical leaders.
- Participates in community-wide initiatives to improve access to high quality health care for the uninsured and underinsured.
- Participates in Provider meetings, QA meetings, Leadership Team meetings and other professional activities as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
- Leads recruitment and retention efforts for provider staff positions.
- Supervises and supports site Associate Medical Directors through goal setting, coaching, and mentoring.

Qualifications:
- Active California medical license, preferably in Family Practice, OB experience preferred, and good standing with the Medical Quality Control Board of the State of California.
