We have been retained by Stratacare (www.stratacare.com) to perform a national search for a Vice President of Product Management based in Irvine, CA.

Started in 1998, Stratacare has steadily evolved into one of the nation's leading workers’ compensation bill review solutions.   In 2009 they were purchased by investors including Schroeder Life Sciences, Beacon Petty, individual investors and senior management.  With over 185 employees, Stratacare provides software and outsourcing services to clients in 50 states.  This growing organization has recently completed the acquisition of the MedBillPro™ division of CS Stars LLC, a business unit of Marsh, Inc. and will continue to diversify its product lines in the coming years.

 

About the position:

The Vice President reports to the Chief Operating Officer.  This is a new position which will oversee four directors (approximate staff of 25).  The VP of Product Management will be chartered with building and developing a world-class product management organization specializing in customer-driven innovation.  Additionally, he/she will have oversight for all aspects of Product Management Operations for the Company inclusive of product definition, product usability, product market readiness, product compliance and product quality and product rollout. This includes shared accountability for product profitability.

We are looking for a highly intelligent, self-confident leader who understands return on investment (for the company overall) when it comes to evaluating software and product requests.  He/she will bring a proven track record of success in a collaborative and participatory environment and will possess the ability to work with all levels within the organization including professional and support staff as well as vendors and partners.

The ability to function within a mid-size organization and good business acumen are a must.  The successful candidate will be highly innovative, self-directed and hands-on.  Qualified candidates for this position should have a minimum of:

  • 10 years of progressive management and leadership experience in Product Management, Applications Integration or Applications Development;
  • Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s degree or MBA is desirable;
  • Prior experience overseeing an IT or Product Development organization.
  • Full-lifecycle product management experience, preferably in workers’ compensation, bill review, cost containment, claims management, medical billing, PPO or MPN Networks, general healthcare industry, Medicare, managed care organizations specialty review networks, and/or related software product experience; and,
  • Leadership within a technology organization that delivers software as a service to either internal or external clients is preferred.

 

Key short-term goals for the Vice President:

  • Develop the structure and discipline to prioritize software enhancements and new product requests;
  • Analyze and prioritize existing customer and internal software requests; and,
  • Help define how bill review and data analytics will tie to medical management products.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

THE POSITION

The VP of Product Management will be chartered with Building and developing a world-class product management organization specializing in customer-driven innovation.

Additionally, the VP of Product management will have oversight for all aspects of Product Management Operations for the Company inclusive of product definition, product usability, product market readiness, product compliance and product quality and product rollout. This includes shared accountability for product profitability.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific duties will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Leads multiple cross-functional teams to deliver customer solutions; participates actively in partnership with Production Technology in all stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • Oversees management of product family lifecycle, requirements definition and roadmap planning.
  • Identifies new areas for growth and expansion of existing product offerings; creates and constantly updates and improves products to maintain product relevance and support customer retention.
  • Stays abreast of the Bill Review competitive landscape, with a clear view of functionality gaps and opportunities for differentiation.
  • Plays a crucial role in defining overall product and growth strategy for StrataCare products.  Recommends and implements strategic changes in product direction.
  • Provides strategic direction, product and customer requirements to Software Development, life cycle planning, pricing, product introduction and any other functions deemed necessary for the success and profitability of products.
  • Crafts a winning vision and business plans, grounded in solid market research, competitive analysis, market planning, customer requirements, user scenarios, pricing, promotion and the delivery of value to customers and partners.
  • Maintains ongoing product P&L and monitors expenses to ensure compliance with budgetary constraints.  Maximizes efficiencies and controls costs.
  • Creates metrics to measure the success of the product strategy/product management team and publishes the results against targets.
  • Improves product management processes and ensures that all products meet established criteria before release.
  • Communicates to and coordinates with finance, marketing and client services to ensure the successful launch of products in the market.
  • Builds relationships across product lines, business units and functional groups to secure alignment and drive optimal execution of plans.
  • Resolves gaps and overlaps in product strategies across product lines.
  • Represents the “voice of the customer” to the teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Stays abreast and aware of all regulatory and compliance requirements affecting assigned product(s).
  • Maintains ongoing awareness of market trends including client-driven wants and needs as well as incorporating internal research and development (R&D).  Develops hands-on, in-depth knowledge of competitive products and maintains technical analysis of competitive strengths and weaknesses.
  • Facilitates project team meetings and monitoring of status.
  • Collaborates with product managers, marketing and sales to develop technical marketing collateral including application notes, FAQs, product notes, user guides, field training presentations and demos.
  • Engages with Software Development and Quality Assurance on an ongoing basis to develop strategies and execution plans for the implementation of defined strategy.
  • Streamlines and implements improvements to ensure processes are scalable for growth and utilize resources in the most effective manner possible.
  • Ensures on time product delivery, product quality, product unit costs, capital and expense budget management, product innovation and operations life cycle management.
  • Provides staff leadership to project teams; manages, facilitates and staffs multi-disciplinary workgroups and projects and develops senior leadership and key client strategies, recommendations and approach.
  • Assists and cooperates with co-workers, supervisor and management; maintains positive morale within the unit by motivating and supporting staff.
  • Develops a diverse, innovative, cooperative and well-trained workforce.  Forecasts future managerial needs and develops clear objectives and processes for succession planning.
  • Participates in and/or leads structured problem solving teams and applies statistical and other problem solving tools.  Collaborates with peer management to effectively identify and resolve problems and conflicts.
  • Manages confidential client, financial and employee information with discretion and good judgment in accordance with department and Company guidelines.
  • Demonstrates a dependable work ethic.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the art practices; participating in professional societies.
  • Performs supervisory duties including staffing, assigning and monitoring progress of assignments, maximizing performance, conducting performance and salary reviews.
  • Acts as a member of the management team to strengthen and support the financial and operational goals of the Company:

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND TEAM

The VP Product Management will report directly to StrataCare’s Chief Operating Officer.

The VP of Product Management supervises the entire product management team through four or five product managers.

 

CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Qualified candidates for the VP Product Management role should have a minimum of ten years of progressive management and leadership experience in Product Management, Applications Integration or Applications Development with preference for an individual who has displayed leadership within a technology organization that delivers software as a service to either internal or external clients. While Insurance, Claims and/or Bill Review industry expertise is helpful, such experience is not required. Prior experience overseeing an IT or Product Development organization would also be helpful.

To perform effectively in this position, the candidate is required to have:

  • Full-lifecycle product management experience, preferably in workers’ compensation bill review, cost containment, claims management, medical billing, PPO or MPN Networks, general healthcare industry, Medicare, managed care organizations, specialty review networks, and/or related software product experience.
  • Track-record delivering product on-time and according to specifications.
  • Substantial experience establishing priorities and facilitating trade-offs in priority-setting.
  • Demonstrated ability managing long-term projects, and multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong problem analysis and problem-solving at both a strategic and functional level.
  • Ability to incorporate and manage the balance between business, strategic and technical requirements when identifying, developing implementing and delivering new products.
  • Demonstrated ability leading the P&L for existing and newly created products.
  • Firsthand practical knowledge and application of product pricing methodologies, user experience management, product enhancement, production support and customer retention.
  • Experience with cross-functional teams that include software development, technical services and client services staff.
  • Strong technical background including understanding of the software development process. Technical expertise including Microsoft.NET, SQL Database, software development, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) or other related technical experience is helpful.  Experience with ASP models is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically when researching, developing and implementing products.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage a team of product managers overseeing a complex  family of enterprise software solutions.
  • Proven management and organizational skills working in a fast-paced and high growth environment where the individual has been involved in scaling a company through fast growth to greater maturity in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience working in different stages of company’s growth and is comfortable with fast change, quick decisions and developing and implementing new processes and procedures.
  • Experience in introduction of new programs and services in an organization, including research, development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple activities with changing priorities simultaneously.
  • Competency to utilize Company software and proficiency in Microsoft software applications and a willingness to learn new systems as necessary.
